Philanthropy

More and more successful individuals are supporting causes that they feel passionate about.  Whether you wish to dedicate your time, money, connections or ideas, and whether you want to make a difference at home or overseas for today or into the future, our charitable giving specialists can support you with all aspects of your philanthropic activities.

The team has extensive experience in not-for-profit, charity and tax law, and regularly helps wealthy individuals to find the best way of achieving their philanthropic aims to suit their own particular circumstances. We work with our clients to help them decide the level of their ongoing participation, recognising that some wish to play an active, high profile, role and be closely involved in the running of the charity, whilst others prefer to remain anonymous and leave the decision making to others.

Whatever your aims and aspirations we can advise on the best location, format, and governance arrangements to meet your needs.

Once established, we can support the day-to-day running of a charitable enterprise by advising on issues such as:

  • onward donation, liaising with consultants on the ground both in the UK and overseas, advising on and preparing grant agreements as well as assisting with investment strategies and dealing with the Charity Commission, Companies House and HMRC in relation to reporting requirements and tax repayment claims.

Some examples of where we have supported clients with their philanthropic activities include:

Helped a well known philanthropic family to overturn a decision of the Charity Commission that one of their charitable foundations should be wound up and the proceeds distributed within a limited period of time.

Established undergraduate scholarship programmes for English and American universities on behalf of a young philanthropist who wanted to offer financial support to bright children from deprived backgrounds.

Created a charitable company and a not-for-profit company for three ex-servicemen who are raising money, changing attitudes and inspiring others with their work for wounded servicemen and women.
