Experience:
Richard advises on all aspects of employment law, from recruitment to termination and post-termination issues. His experience encompasses the full range of employment issues from drafting executive service agreements to advising on complex employee relations, remuneration and bonuses, discrimination, TUPE and dismissals. He also advises on drafting and enforcing restrictive covenants, team moves and breaches of contract. He has extensive advocacy experience in both employment tribunals and the Employment Appeal Tribunal.
His clients include employers and senior executives, both UK and international, across a wide range of sectors including financial services, professional and business services, recruitment, publishing, software and IT.
Richard prides himself on always trying to understand the wider business context in which his advice is given so that it is practical, relevant and concise and achieves the most effective overall result for his clients. He was recommended in the Legal 500 2010 directory as “sensible and commercial”.
Richard is Secretary and on the Management Committee of the Employment Lawyers' Association as well as being on the Editorial Board of the association’s journal, ELA Briefing. He has had numerous articles published and is a regular contributor to legal and trade publications. He frequently comments in the national press and has appeared on national television and radio.
Richard joined Speechly Bircham in 2009 when it merged with Campbell Hooper Solicitors LLP with whom he had been a partner since 2008. Prior to this, Richard was at Dawsons for over seven years, after qualifying as a solicitor at Paisner & Co in 1994 then working for the Engineering Employers’ Federation.
Interests include golf, travel, scuba diving and spending time with his children.
