City law firm Speechly Bircham has today released a strong set of financial results for the year ending April 2010.
The figures underline the success of the firm’s merger with Campbell Hooper last year in a deal that propelled Speechly Bircham towards the UK Top 50 by revenues.
Financial highlights include:
- Revenues were £58.4m, an increase of 29% (Y/E2009 £45.4)
- PEP also climbed by 29% to £428,000 (Y/E 2009: £331,000)
Commenting on today’s results, Michael Lingens, Managing Partner said:
“This is a very solid set of results which are particularly pleasing when viewed against the economic backdrop. The combined firm exceeded the budget we set at the time of the merger with Campbell Hooper in June 2009 and achieved an underlying growth in revenues of 8%.
Despite the decline in the property and corporate markets, we continued to benefit from our broad practice, with activity in private client and other advisory areas particularly strong. Happily, transactional work has also picked up in the last few months and activity levels are high across the board as we start the new financial year.
As well as pulling off a significant merger, we have continued to invest in new people and practice areas. We are now an 89 partner firm (up from 71 last year), which also includes the appointment of three former Shadbolts partners to establish a projects practice and of Robert Bell (from Nabarro) as head of competition law. We have also made three internal partner promotions this year - James Souter (Real Estate Litigation), Nicholas Tall (Intellectual Property, Technology & Commercial) and Helena Luckhurst (Private Client), which took effect on 1 May 2010.
As a 250 lawyer firm we believe that we have the scale and market position to take advantage of the recovery. We will continue to build up our capabilities to serve a growing UK and international client base. We pride ourselves on delivering a full service offering to businesses and individuals and in future we will be putting more emphasis on our sectoral expertise in financial services, private wealth, technology and construction.
I should like to take this opportunity to thank all of our partners and staff who have joined forces magnificently and whose efforts have made these results possible.”
The partners also elected office holders for a new 3 year term starting on 1 May 2010. Alan Julyan was re-elected as Senior Partner and Michael Lingens as Managing Partner (for a fifth term).
