Commitment to the community
We aim to work closely with our local and wider community. We support our community through a variety of methods financially either from staff or from the firm itself, via our fundraising efforts and/or most importantly from individuals volunteering their time. We therefore assist a large number of people, with the added benefit of developing our staff at the same time.
At Speechly Bircham, our people are actively involved in giving their time to support a wide range of community initiatives and charitable causes, from fundraising activities to volunteering and offering pro bono support in their spare time.
Our pro bono and community projects
Each of our firm-wide pro bono and community projects have been set up and are run by members of our CSR committee including: trainees; fee earners; support staff and partners.
- Ibex Earth pro bono scheme engages directly with an array of environmental charities and non-profit organisations offering them free legal advice.
- The i in online project predominately educates primary and secondary aged school children and also their parents and teachers with protecting their personal information online and also highlights the dangers of various internet and social networking sites.
- King's Legal Clinic is the first legal clinic run by students (support by Speechly Bircham lawyers) and completely aimed at supporting the legal needs of both undergraduate and post-graduate students.
- Life Matters project provides fun, role-play style legal presentations to the Blackfriars elderly group by our trainees.
- Reading scheme in primary schools, supporting children aged 6-10 years.
The Speechly Bircham's nominated charities
There are many individual charities which employees feel personally passionate about and we encourage everyone to continue their valuable support, but the firm would like to focus their efforts on two main charities for the year.
Blackfriars Settlement - based in north Southwark, the Blackfriars charity helps local people by creating opportunities for children and youths, elderly people with befriending schemes, training and education sessions and law clinics.
Charity webinars
To support the charity sector and our nominated charities, we held a series of six legal webinars which covered; contracts, employment law, websites and online, charity structures, IP rights and charity accounts.
