Speechly Bircham advises on the administration of The General Trading Company Limited

24 July 2008

Speechly Bircham is advising restructuring and insolvency specialists MCR, the joint administrators for the world famous department store, The General Trading Company.

Famous for managing the wedding lists for Diana Spencer, Sarah Ferguson and Camilla Parker-Bowles, the Company was placed into administration on Monday 21 July 2008.

Founded by the Part family in 1920, the General Trading Company was one of London’s first ‘boutique’ home stores focusing on soft furnishings, interior décor, chinaware and glassware as well as clothing and accessories. It rapidly became highly fashionable and as well as gaining Royal patronage, it was one of the first stores in the UK to develop the concept of the ‘Wedding List’, now a traditional part of any marriage.

The joint administrators, Philip Duffy, Jason Godefroy and Paul Clark, are trading the business as normal and anticipate that they will secure a going concern sale soon. Speechly Bircham is retained to advise the joint administrators throughout the course of the administration and represent them in respect of any successful sale negotiations.

Speechly Bircham’s team is led by Head of Insolvency and Corporate Recovery, Christopher Harlowe, assisted by Simon Ridpath and Amy Gallimore.
